What to Look for in an MRP System

Key things you should know about an MRP System

An MRP System (Materials Requirements Planning) helps a manufacturing company utilize built-in scheduling logic to manage the flow of materials in the manufacturing operation. Companies are looking at ways to reduce inventory costs, drive down lead times while improving customer service, improve the manufacturing process and improve product quality. Using an MRP system, a manufacturer can become much more efficient and better plan the needs for resources, both in terms of materials as well as capacity within the factory and better serve the customer.

There are two types of MRP Systems that can be discussed. First is Material Requirements Planning and the second is Manufacturing Resource Planning or MRPII. A traditional MRP System is one where the software uses the Bills of Materials, Inventory levels, and the Master Production Schedule to calculate and plan the need for replenishment orders. An MRPII system is a system that plans many more functions of the entire manufacturing process, including Capacity Requirements planning, Master Production scheduling, Plan Simulations and all the aspects of the classic MRP system.

Most systems today are MRPII based systems, so from this point forward, if we are referring to an MRP System, we are really discussing MRPII systems as that is what is presently offered in the market and includes the earlier aspects of MRP.

Researching an MRP System often brings about a lot of questions and uncertainty. Not so much about the planning system and how it calculates the requirements, that is usually just a calculation that you can get from a good Material Requirements Planning book from any bookstore or online. Really, the question usually comes about as to where the differences are between the material requirements planning systems.

Essentially, the key differentiators of these systems would be the ease of their ability for them to allow you to see the multiple layers of planning. But even more, the ease in which you can keep the data clean. With thousands of parts and possibly thousands of Bills of Materials (along with the many variations), you will need to be able to easily update or even mass update parts, BOMs, routings and all of the detail surrounding them.

MRP System as part of an ERP solution

As most manufacturing system software is a subcomponent of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), it is worth looking at how the materials planning aspect of the ERP interacts with the rest of the system. For example, how well does the system communicate order requirements to the shop floor control system? How well does the Product Data Management aspect of the ERP interact with the Bills of Material module? How well does the inventory control system work with the Quality Management system? For example, if you receive inventory into the system, is there a way to isolate it from the MRP System while it undergoes quality inspections?

When looking at requirements planning systems the real concern is how the users will use it. It needs to be as simple as possible to interact with from a user perspective. However, it needs to be able to drive all of the capacity and material plans that you need to run the business. An important thing to try is to let your material planning or purchasing people try out the system during the demo phase. They won’t be able to run the system without help, but at least they can get a feel for the screens and the depth of information provided.

Another important tip is to make sure that all of your people who are interacting with the system, such as buyers, planners, and inventory managers all have training on the concepts of MRP. This will help them get up to speed quickly once a new system is in place.

Your Future MRP System

When you get down to a short list of vendors, it would be a great idea to start looking at the quality of the information from your existing MRP System. Clean up the Bills of Materials. Obsolete any that are out of date. Ensure that your inventory counts are accurate. Make sure that your customer orders are clean and old back-orders that will never ship are closed. You should begin the cleanup of the data in the source system long before you even think about transferring it to the new system. If you do it a little at a time over a period of months, by the time you are ready to migrate the data to the new system, you will be ready to utilize the new system immediately. At some point the data needs to be clean, it might as well be now.

Lastly, find out early from the software provider of the new system what additional data elements you will need to support their system. You may not be capturing that data currently, so start building the list now. Moving to a new MRP system does not need to be difficult, but it will take some cleanup and planning.

The type of company that offers federally funded supplement education service (SES) tutoring has changed in some cases drastically from years past. In the beginning, fairly well-known companies and not for profit agencies that already offered private tutoring services offered SES tutoring services to school districts. Many parents, already familiar with the names and services these companies provided, were happy to receive free tutoring for their children. Those individuals began to understand that they would be very effective in conceiving and running programs because they were intimately familiar with their students and the challenges they faced with achievement.

The number of provider applications in some states has doubled every year and because of the way the No Child Left Behind Act has set up their criteria for eligibility, the number of children participating continues to rise as well. The economy also played a contributing, yet unforeseen, part in this phenomenon. With the rise in unemployment, the number of children eligible for free and reduced lunch increased thereby increasing the number of eligible children. This coupled with increased teacher layoffs, all worked to create the current state of SES. There are now hundreds of SES tutoring companies who are providing SES tutorial services to millions of children across the United States. But of the many, a few have taken some bold steps in venturing into the virtual realm. As education changes, more and more of it will be done remotely. If you’re considering starting an online/virtual supplement education service tutoring company, there are a few things you should consider prior to launching your business.

Every SES tutoring company should strive to be as effective and cost effective as possible and strategic use of technology is an excellent way to cut on marketing costs as well as operational costs. Still other SES companies have chosen to run a Virtual SES tutoring program using laptops, Webcams, Skype, Portable Headsets, Go to My PC, MiFi Hot Spots ($20 – $80) – Verizon with or with-out a contract, Virgin Mobile, and/or Clearwire (In select areas) – no contract ($35 – $60).

There are various online programs that will either support existing learning books and curriculum or are stand-alone programs, and others that use technological tools to present the material to the students. The stand-alone programs are fairly simple, you pay a license fee per child (usually $5 to $10 per child per month or $99 a year is going to be typical) for the child to have unlimited access to their program. Many programs are interactive and are tailored specifically to each child’s learning ability. Learning CD’s will typically cost you a one time fee but you would be able to use the same CD for multiple children.

This is a necessary component of any curriculum that re-quires the student to have internet access. You cannot rely on the school system to provide computers though you can certainly ask if they would allow you to use their computer lab. There are a couple of things to note here particularly when it comes to costs and the students actually being able to use a laptop. Do not buy any equipment that is incapable of handling at least your basic windows. Windows CE for example is the same type of software that you will find on mobile devices and many programs, particularly your interactive programs will re-quire more capability. Netbooks are not a good idea, they are not meant to handle most interactive online curriculum and unless you get a warranty against any damage, you are bound to run into problems with broken equipment.

It may take some time to really do your research to find cost effective laptops and those laptops may likely have to be found overseas but your time is well spent looking for Laptops rather than Netbooks.

You should know if you are running an online program that some states and/or districts do not allow online SES tutoring programs – i.e. Connecticut. Before deciding which states to target, you may want to contact the state’s education agency and consult the state website to verify that online/virtual tutoring is acceptable for supplemental education services.

Help, My TI-83 / Ti-84 Won’t Graph

It’s 8 o’clock at night. Dinner is over. You’re sitting down to watch a movie or Monday Night Football — and then it happens . . . “Mommmmmmmmm (or Daddddddddddd), my calculator isn’t working. I have to turn in my math homework tomorrow, and my graph isn’t showing up.”

“This can’t be so bad”, you think. “I passed high school math. Heck, I even installed the Quicken Accounting System at work. How complicated can a calculator be?”

The last time you looked at your child’s TI-83 or TI-84 was in August at the office superstore; it was in the front of a shopping cart with on top of a pile three ring binders and notebook paper. It didn’t look so bad then, but now you take a closer look and there are all kinds of keys you never saw before on a calculator. At the bottom is something familiar — a normal looking array of number keys, and at the right are the usual add, subtract, multiply, and divide keys. But what the heck are “MODE”, “DEL”, “STAT”, “ZOOM”, “TRACE”, etc. ? What are you going to do? Who ya gonna call?

Relax.

Here are a couple of really simple things to do; but remember, the title of this article is “Help, My TI-83 / Ti-84 Won’t Graph”, and that is really all that is addressed in this article.

The Graphing Buttons

Look at the top row of buttons on the TI-83/TI-84 calculator. There should be five of them, set apart from the other buttons; and they should have the following labels:

      [Y=]   [WINDOW]   [ZOOM]   [TRACE]   [GRAPH]

This is where all of your activity is going to take place.

The Three Major Problems

Most of the time when a graph is not displaying, there are three reasons:

  1. Graph Function.The graph function is not entered properly, or not entered at all.
  2. Graph Not Turned On. The graph function is entered properly, but graphing is not turned on.
  3. Viewing Window. The viewing window for the function is set to the wrong size or location.

We will deal with these one at a time.

Check that the Graph Function is Entered Properly

Push the [Y=] key at the top of the calculator. This puts you into the Y= editor screen. You should see a screen that looks something like this:

Y5=

Y6=

The expression “2X+1” is just an example, but you need to see some kind of expression in the Y= editor screen, not just a bunch of blank “Y=” lines. If all you see is the following, then you need to add an expression:

Plot1 Plot2 Plot3

Y1=

Y2=

Y3=

Y4=

Y5=

Y6=

If you want to try a really simple expression to make sure that the calculator can plot, use “Y1=X”. This should plot a nice 45 degree line directly through the origin of the graph screen.

Check that the Graph Function is Turned On

It is possible that graphing of the function is not turned on in the Y= editor screen. This error is a little bit subtle. Look at the “=” sign in the equation you are trying to plot The “=” sign, must be highlighted.

If it is not, you must cursor to the “=” sign and press the [ENTER] key, to highlight it.

Viewing Window must be Set to Correct Size and Location

If the viewing window is set to the wrong size or location, the calculator may plot but you won’t see it on the screen.

There are many ways to set the viewing window, but an easy reliable method is to simply “Zoom Out”, until you see the function you are trying to graph. Push the [ZOOM] key at the top of the calculator. Then push “3” to zoom out. Repeat until you see the function you are trying to graph. Now you should have some idea what window you need to use to see the function plotted. Push the [WINDOW] key at the top of the calculator and adjust the display characteristics as necessary.

How And When To Use Por, Para and Porque in Spanish

Some beginner students (and advanced) usually have some problems with when they should use POR, PARA or PORQUE and it can be one of the most frustrating topics to learn in all of Spanish. In this lesson we are going to review some rules to recognize when we should use one or another.

We use POR when we want to speak about the reason behind something. In this case you have to use a noun after POR.

POR + Noun: “Me gusta Buenos Aires por el clima.” (I like Buenos Aires because of the weather.)

“Como pollo por las proteínas que tiene.” (I eat chicken because it has protein.)

In Spanish you should use PARA when you are speaking about the objective of an action or the objective of an object. In this case you will use the verb in the infinitive form. PARA + Infinitive Verb: “Ahorro dinero para viajar a otro pais”. (I save money to travel to another country.)/ “El lapiz sirve para escribir.” (The pencil is used to write.).

Finally, we use Porque when you are speaking about the reason of something, but instead of using just the infinitive of the verb, we use the conjugation of the verb.

PORQUE + Conjugated Verb: “Voy a comprarme ropa nueva porque quiero estar elegante esta noche”.

(I am going to buy new clothes because I want to be elegant tonight.)

So, when someone asks you: “Por que estudias espanol?”

(Why do you study Spanish?), you can answer in different ways:

Por mi trabajo. (Because of my job.)

Por el crecimiento del mercado latino. (Because of the growth of the Latin market.)

Para poder comunicarme con personas que hablan espanol. (To be able to communicate with people who speak Spanish.)

Para viajar por Sudamerica. (For travelling around South America.)

Porque me gusta. (Because I like it.)

Porque quiero conseguir un trabajo mejor. (Because I want to find a better job.)

This little lesson doesn’t cover all aspects of when to use POR, PARA and PORQUE, but it should give you a good start at understanding some important differences of when they are used. Be on the lookout for more lessons about POR, PARA Y PORQUE in the future.
